Great, my ISP has provided me with a sucky 256kbs connection for the past ca. 3 months. The thing is, it wasn't supposed to be availabe at this address, so we ordered 1mbit connection in the first place.

And for a 1mbit connection we've been charged for. Grrreat!

Needles to say, I made a reclamation. I'd better get decent compensation for this.. Furthermore, I had to find out about this myself. They would've been charging me extra for the connection 'til the end of days if I hadn't figured this out.. I know I know.. I should've figured this out sooner, but I thought the net is a tad slow because I don't have enough RAM on my comp. And also, my gf is using the net aswell with her comp..

To make things even better, I sell this ISP products. If need be, I'll bother the aerial sales manager for this.

Our connection is supposed to be "upto 8mb".

For the first few days it was under 1mb, the next few it was 4.5, then it went down to 2, now its 3.5mb.

are you on DSL or Cable?? Makes a huge difference. Digital Subscriber Line is just that - your own line, with it's own bandwidth. With cable you share the bandwidth with everyone in your area who is on that same line. Soooo... with DSL you can complain about not getting you allocated speeds but with cable they usually just tell you there is no promise you will always connect at the highest speed possible due to fluctuating bandwidth demand of your area.

Yes I know my spelling sucks.

My ntl 10mb line seems to run at an average of 3.5mb.

Well worth £50 a month...

It's a DSL connection, hence the reclamation ;)

They noticed their error and gave more bandwidth already, I'm just waiting for compensation since we've been paying for the faster connectioin for months and not been getting it..

Are you on cable or dsl? I'm living outside Oxford, and getting 2.2mb instead of 8mb connection...

My reclamation has been received and it's being processed atm. Haven't heard anything as of yet though..

My beloved flatmate threw out what she thought was a bit of junk mail from our ISP.

Turns out it was notification of a free upgrade from 8mb to 24mb on our line and that I had to reset my modem to activate it. :(

Cable, and I'm right in the city centre...

Kinda sucks, I know a lot of my mates in the area are having similar troubles with varying connections.

And NTL were cheeky enough to call me yesterday - whilst I was at work, mind - and ask if I was satisfied with my service...

God, if the are anything like BT Customer Services you may as well give up :p Hope things improve, if not move to Shoreditch in London where you can get a 2GB/s connection :)

NTL's customer service is widely acknowledged as the worst in the UK telecommunications industry, and I've seen no evidence to the contrary.

That is bonkers... Do you think it's worth moving to England just for a fast connection? :)
That is just mind-boggling! why on earth was it done? Was it just something for the local council to brag about? So, what does it cost? As I am constantly reminded by various people, nothing is for free.

I have found recently that I can get up to 98kbs by holding on to my wireless card's aerial, which for me is a phenomenal speed... going faster than all other computers in the house, despite the fact that my pc is wireless!

As it turned out, indeed we had had the wrong speed. Though, for the first month or so the speed was incorrect, but we were charged the right amount of money.

We upgraded the speed, but the upgrade never happened. Thus, we were charged extra for about a month or so. Until I noticed the wrong speed/cost.

We were only compensated for 20 euros, when we in effect only had payed roughly 13 euros 'extra'. So, I guess it was worth making a reclamation :) The ISP is going to give a 20 euro discount from the next bill, which whill be November-December.

Your on 98kbps Hugo? Seems very strange amount, what is the overall aconnection for your household? I thought being on 2.2Mbps was bad lol...

Hugo.B

The BT official max speed is 8Mbps, and the main (family) computer's (wired) connection to the router is 100Mbps, my current speed 'tween my comp and router is 36-48Mbps, whilst my current download speed is 42-62kbs.

Hope all the info is understandable.

So you aren't on 98kbps? Sounds more like a 512kbps connection to your PC.

Totally OT, but just don't want to open a new thread for this:

What would be the cheapest external HD out in the market. It can also be small as hell, I'm not looking for lots of storage space.

It should, however, be fast enough to be able to run XP and games through Macbook.

Suggestions?

I was thinking of putting my old 20gig HD to a rack, but then again, a rack costs about 20-30 euros and I'd prolly have to buy a new HD anyway. I've seen a 250gig external Hd for less than 120 euros? Is that worth buying?

I would also be able to buy a new one from work for about 95 euros or so..

Here's one for £45.53:
Eclipse computers. (http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=HE-835UF)

With a transfer rate of 480MB/second through via USB 2.0 £57.55:
Pixmania. (http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/90662/art/freecom/classic-sl-80-gb-usb-2-0.html?srcid=867)

That's the best I could find in a 5 minutes, and only of any use if you live in Britain :)

War Pig, I'm sure you'll do just as well as any of us at searching a site for external hard drives ;)

War Pig

Well, obviously I can find external HDs on the internet and from work.

The thing is, I'm a miser(?), lol! I don't "need" more than 80 gigs or so (even though one can't have too much storage space, right..), and all the HDs out in the market are like 180 gigs or more.. :( So, in effect, I'd be paying "more" than I'd need..

Then again, 120 euros isn't that bad for 250 gig.
