I was reading KominAaa's post in the forgotten battles thread ... about the assault of Carpiquet's airfield near Caen ... and had an idea.
Say we have a map where you need to destroy/flush out a bunker the conventional way - burn the f***kers out!
You must protect your "Flamer" because he is your only chance at succeeding - similar to Cs's VIP maps - and he can die with one well placed shot to his tanks. Now, escort him to the objective and let him do his thing. A flame thrower could be used in numerous scenarios, just let your imaginations run wild, not only this but i think it could lead to dramatic and intense gameplay, where you are actually losing something for letting a teammate or yourself die.

I am seeing an allied squad pinned down outside a building in a burnt out village, as axis troops try their best to flank and kill them, while all they are trying to do is protect the flamethrower - and this is but one possibility!

Flamethrowers rarely exploded when hit IRL. It depends on the rounds fired at it, and the fuels and propellents used in the flamethrower.

So that just means the flamethrower could take multiple hits for a bit more forgiving gamepley... I like the idea. The flamer has to be controlled by a real person though.

Reminds me of the VIP gametype from TFC. Don't really see alot of it anymore, but there really wasn't anything wrong with it.

i have a real problem dedicating a whole map to eradicating a bunker.

lol, maps should have more scope than that. imagine 16 players fighting against 16 players in ONE bunker, its kinda crazy realy. have them breach a defencive line or something but one bunker?

Depends on the bunker I guess. Some of them were large and complex buildings/compounds.

Whether it would turn into a map..dunno..

Summary:

Carpiquet Village (bottom left) and airfield were objectives for 3rd Canadian Division on D-Day, 2 or 3 miles west of Caen. However, it was not until early July that Canadian troops finally captured the area after a violent battle with the 12th SS Division.

More:
On 4 July, General Dempsey launched the Operation Windsor. The first target was the Carpiquet airfield. It was one of the initial objectives set for the D-Day, like Caen, and the airfield had been resisting since nearly a month. At 5 am the Canadians of the 8th Brigade started the attack against Carpiquet, while the Royal Winnipeg Rifles drew on a diversion manoeuvre. The troops closely followed the artillery shelling, reinforced by the Navy guns. Around 8:30 am, after fierce fighting, the town of Carpiquet was liberated. The assault moved on toward the airfield, supported by tanks of the Fort Garry Horse, the North Shore and La Chaudière infantry regiments. But they broke against the solid german defenses. During the night, the Hitlerjugend SS grenadiere onrush was repulsed by the Camerons machine-guns. It took three more days of fierce fighting with the Operation charnwood to take the airfield. On 9 July, the 8th Brigade and the 1st Hussars tanks seized the last hangars, and pushed back the grenadiere, who defended their trenches to the bitter end.

airfield in the middle, Carpiquet village below it (the closely packed suburbs) - you can see all those bright spots on the field are bomb drops

That's all I could find, oh and read the text at this link:

Now, if you're going to do a map of the airfield, I suggest you have tall grass and maybe some out-of-action shermans/vehicles in the field for more cover. Also, any low-dug roads or ditches would be helpful too.

Since there are roads around the airfield, you can also make an alternate route or two for some soldiers to travel across and flank *that bright, wide, hooking road on the east*, and I suggest tall grass, fences, and land mounds so it isn't so easy to get sniped with head shots or mowed down by MG fire. Would be good to put a destroyed British vehicle on that road too and ditches, fences, even a shack off to the side for cover if there's a shootout so they don't just stand out in the open. Also, blast craters in the field from the heavy bombing would make good coverage spots.

I'm getting most of these ideas from that fourth photo down which I think is good for a layout of the field. To the left of those destroyed hangars might be where the big bunker is at, but don't forget german trenches around that side of the field too. If you want to imlement the flamethrower objective, you could have flag captures along with having to destroy that bunker. Flag captures like... The field, the side road, or the hangers for some ideas as long as they're spread apart fairly. I also agree with the responses on implementing a flame thrower unit (how that could be done for fun and fair gameplay).

Unfortunately I don't have that much experience making maps, but I'm learning. Still, I know this wouldn't turn out that great if I tried it, but there's my visual feedback to anyone who wants to attempt it.

You could even make a tournament campaign out of it... from that link I gave. All you'd need to do is make that airfield map, then a map for fighting inside of the Carpiquet village (it's in those first two photos above, and I think the second is the best). Make an alternate night version for the Carpiquet field map too. I'd have to do more reading for that order of battle and get back to you...

I could make the map, given the right photos of the scenery of the specific area. I doubt i could make that entire airfield, or mabey i could ?
But we'll have too see which gamemodes/etc the team decides to come up with because i will be limited to the fgd.

- I haven't played with source mapping too much
