today i play all sorts of gmaes, but i continue to see many in the past that just still cannot be beat.
a while back i purchased a copy of ufo aftermath. a post apocolyptic strategy and tactical shooter where you fight off an alien invasion. your men build bases, research the "dreamland files"(the area 51 files) and even adapt alien technology for your use to fight off the invasion and the altered beings that they turned 90% of the earth into. in reality the game is reminisant of a true blue classic i had in my collection so i quit ufo and i popped in my x-com ufo defence floppies.
the realisation is that the new ufo aftermath wich supposedly took the best ideas from x-com and inproved everything SUCKS compared to the old 2d tactical x-com ufo defense(though the world map is 3d). for those who dont know, x-com ufo defense is a buisness simulation of sorts. you run a "business" that keeps extra terestrials from terrorising earth. each nation in the world funds you depending on your ability to defend them. the better the job you do the more money you get and thus the farther you exapand. however eventually the goal is to basically beat off the alien invaders.
the way the game does this is incredible. for example, each soldier you have in the field is DIFFERENT. they all have their own stats and traits. some are better with rocket launchers and auto cannons(think a minigun) while others are fast and good with basic rifles and so on. they all level up(this is expressed in rank, like squadee, sgt and so on). when you construct a new base you start out with a elevator shaft to the world and you plan it from there. aliens attacking bases can strike through the elevator or aircraft bays. if you plan your base acordingly it can become incredibly easy to defend.
the game goes on and on, the ammount of stategies you can inploy is incredible. the sad thing is that i havent found a new game that realy compares in the same genre. it just realy sucks. its sucks so bad that one day i would like to try my own hand at remaking x-com.... but the reality is that the same case is true with many modern games. its like VERY FEW single player fps' compare to system shock 2. its a fact. why is that? why is the age of the good game at least singleplayer wise over? :(.

Because companies "found" the "jackpot" game and just spoof off it repeatedly (see EA).
I played X-Com UFOD and the sequel Terror from the Deep, I watched my brother play both aswell. The depth of that game is almost unbelieveable, that game along with Master of Orion (the very first also 2d game) are two of the best economic/military management/tactic games I have ever played.
The closest thing that I have played to either (of the recent stock, being say 1996 on) would be the Fallout series, especially in my eyes, Fallout Tactics. Lately there havnt been any games that mix both the economics and tactical gameplay of X-Com.

the only real step up fallout tactics was the engine and in one place the engine was a step down. the fact that with the engine conversations like the old fallouts at least to my knowledge are inpossible.
fallout 1 and 2 have to be in the top 5 rpgs of ALL time. bethesda(or however thier goofy name is spelled) announced that they are producing a fallout 3 but i cant find any more information on it so i bet its going to suck...
the reality is that these modern "jack pot" games arent the jackpot games. do you know how many people bought fallout? how bout how many people who are STILL huge fans and discuss its "universe" online? these older games were INCREDIBLE and sold well. the only great oldie that i can think of that didnt sell well is system shock 2.
it depresses me that every game today rips off each other and just divulges into the same old same old with one new feature. the real reason why graphics are so big with games these days is that they honestly cant find anything else to boast.....

There's an old strategy game I love too called Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far.
I've tried other games that are similar, but they aren't that great.

God, I love the CC series.....Just awesome games. All of them. Started from a bridge too far, and played pretty much all of them. Though, CC3 might be my fav., especially the finmod.

I should've bought CC3 when it came out. Now it sells on ebay for a lot of money (more than I'm willing to spend for an old game) and I can't find any downloads for it. CC2 was the only one I played, but it's still worth it. I loved the attention to detail.

cc3 was exelent. it was probally the best in the serries. the only thing better about cc5 was that you could choose where you attacked next. it combined large strategy with the tactics. however cc3 just had a feelin... i dunno.
good games are just hard to come by these days. one of my few recomendations is the deus ex serries. though at this point i kinda like the original better. its hard to hunt down though.
btw dont go to ebay for cc3, check amazon.com i bet they have a cc3 copy for 13-20 bucks...

actually $55, but it's alright. It's an old game, and I don't play many that often.

hey 55 isnt bad compared to the "lot of money" on ebay i guess. i normally get good deals on oldies off amazon, like i bought a copy of heavy gear off there for like 10 bucks. worked and everything.
that brings me to another classic, heavy gear. you think mech warrior was bad ass? well you never played heavy gear. heavy gear is a game where you fight in basically mini gundams. you are about 8(or was it 10?) meters tall and kick ass. you build your gear from the GROUND UP. you select the legs, arms ect along with verious systems like jamming ability and so on. you can even choose specific parts inside of the individual body parts. along with that there is quite a selection of weapons, guided, bullets and dumn weapons. in reality mech warrior is pathetic compared to that game. the one sad thing is that the second heavy gear removed alot of the cool features....

i also loved x-com back in the day. of course, that was a decade ago, and im only 17 right now, so i was a wee kid when i was playing it, but i loved it anyway, even if i hardly understood it.
i wish there was a version of it exactly the same just with new graphics and whatever new complexity would be available.

i finally found one modern game that is as satisfying as those oldies. by satisfying i mean that feeling you get when you beat say system shock 2 or x-com. just this feeling where you sit back and go "yah...." and are simply content for a long while.
this "new" game i found on gametap(i go through games like tissue paper, i decided it cost too much to buy one after another), beyond good and evil. just a incredible game in every aspect. its presentation is just.... incredible. i seriously havent experienced a game THAT good in a very long time.... its just simply hard to come up with words for what is very near perfection. i have troulble finding a flaw with this game other than the fact that it feels too short(duh! its a game that is that good, you want it to keep going for at least a little while longer!). have any of you guys played this 2003 hit?

I got hooked to it until I reached the hovercraft level in the butchery outskirts which is awfully level designed and could be listed in the most dispapointing moments in great games.
Man.. its like you have to go through a few high speed jumps with some kind of nitro pods but there are 12 jumps and you have 8 nitros. if you fall of you dont die but you cannot climb back nor die. I had to reload the saved state 10 mins earlier (there are save points in the game).
This part sucked ass.

whatdya mean? i went through the butchery outskirts without using a SIGNLE boost. just jam on the jets and get movin. its honestly easy.... most of the game was actually pretty easy but it was fun as hell. i mean at the butchery outskirts with the ammount of health your hovercraft should be packin it doesnt matter if you take almost every possible hit, you should make it...
i havent seen a game with that perfectly designed levels in a while actually. they are carefully planned and orginised, you just gotta see how they are orginised and what the developers want you to do. i guess not everyone saw what to do right away.
edit: i didnt get what your problem was at first but now i get it. DONT use boosts to jump the jumps in the outskirts. you have the jump system for a reason. yknow that thingy you used to get over the laser fence to the butchery in the first place? well thats what its for! when you come to the edge just right click and you should make it easaly.
