well as you may have noticed from the other posts you obviously would have read before making a post yourself, the lack of a release is not due lack of desire or enthusiasm from the devs.
it is a combination things that have been unwittingly thrown at them, case in point - like a software employer claiming conflict of interest

Yes it will happen.
Bear in mind that both the lead developers are currently doing jobs where we're spending 65+ hours a week, every week, sometimes 7 days a week, at work.
When you've sat that long in front of a computer you need a little break, progress is being made however and it really is the last 5-10% worth of finishing to go.

It doesn't look as if this mod is trying to be some stupidly realistic shooter; getting real sick of them.

As far as I understand the release wont be too far off.
The mod has come way too far for it to be put on the shelf at this point. The only things remaining are some polish and updates for historical accuracy.
The game is fully playable and really fun! The testers are eagerly awaiting the release as well.

To be honest not a whole lot has happened over the last few months. But the mod is not dead. Quite the contrary, momentum is beginning to build again... and there really aren't many things on the to-do list. We've been lacking skilled labour but it looks like the (very) few guys on the team who can knock things off the list will have some man hours to put towards HaJ again.

I'm here to represent the indignant internet, asking for what it wants only to tear it apart.
I have no idea actually, I couldn't care less about when it's released, I'm just here because I've been watching the date for about nine months and kind of curiously going off of nothing.
The last time I think it was that release was missing models and animation ... where there was an entire post on it and I was confused as to what else must be missing. I guess it's being polished.
Really I'm being pretty unfair. Especially since the sound guy kicked it. I guess it's fine considering the team is tiny and difficulties keep getting in the way (what do I know, I have no life), it just kind of seems impossible for it to get done.

But you know what? Of all the vaporware out there, this is the one that I most hope solidifies. It looks awesome. I personally hope it helps fill the hole left by DoD getting borked time and time again.

It's a shame that the HaJ developers hit their biggest roadblock it seems in mod progress when they are literally 95% done with the game!! Man that must be frustrating and also sad that one of your more passionate dev members wasnt able to see the end product. But at least that gives us confidence that one day in the future we will be playing a completed game because TOO much has been created to turn back now.
But I do agree with Teemu, a quick hello every now and then like you guys have been doing always helps even if there is nothing new to announce for the game and maybe its time for another reminder that your still on board with the games fulfillment in the future.

Hello,
We're still here. A couple of people have asked for a news update but I've been holding back because I've been struggling to think of something to fill the update with. :/
Situation for me personally is as follows: I'm starting a new job in about a week so I'm on the last week of my old job and being squeezed to tie up loose ends and hand over stuff which isn't simple. Needless to say I'm pressed for time.
I've also had a fatal collision of projects - one a research paper on Horsa gliders of all things that needs to be finished 2 weeks ago plus some updates to the Source tools I make that were asked for by a developer. Again those are late.
So speaking for myself I've got a ton of balls in the air and I'm in that horrible state of not being able to get anything done quickly.
That said, I've been sat in bed most nights with a notebook trying to figure out a definate "to-do" list of items needed for the first release. One of the things on the list is *maybe* not putting the signature Pegasus Bridge map into it as it would relieve the need to finish the airborne models (which are almost done with rigging). It would be a shame to leave out the map which was the inspiration for the whole game but its do that or add another 3-4 weeks to the release date. I might put it to a public vote to see what the feeling is.
I want to try and organise and invite only play test to allow some of the more dedicated followers a chance to take a sneak peak at the game with no restrictions on taking screenshots, vids, etc. and talking about it. It's got to the point now that there is very little that is secret about the game so why have any sort of embargo.
I mentioned in a previous update that the animations were one of the things left. Those are 90% done and I'm just tidying up some small glitches here and there. I haven't yet put them into the main source tree as I don't like committing half finished work so when they do go in it'll be a pretty much complete set of animations.
I'll try and put a more formal news up-date together as soon as I can but I figured I owed it to you to let you know that much.
A.Switz [3rdMAR]
25th January 2012, 08:23 AM
Well, I know it wasnt the gameplan and against pretty much everything you guys stand for, but why not release an Alpha and hope that it helps get more developers signing up?
But the draw back is....and Ill say it just because Im giving an honest guess here.....what if it's (Alpha) not good enough/polished enough and turns away players from the beginning? I agree by letting some guys play test who havent had the chance already can give you guys the best answer to that question and fear. And, you have a good collection of OLD gamers who are watching this mod so you at least have some good/honest people here who can be counted on to not give you a wrong answer by rushing a release.
Jed
25th January 2012, 11:36 AM
You kind of hit the nail on the head really.
There has been some pressure from within the team before to put an Alpha (as you call it) out "as-is" but at that time the game was *really* rough around the edges and not something I would want to put my name on.
Where we stand now it is a lot better but there are still some things that *must* be fixed and some things that could do with a little more polish. It's just a balancing act of getting to a things where you feel comfortable that it won't have a detrimental effect on what people think of the game.
If people don't get a good experience from the first release the chances are they'll play it for an hour and never again. If those people spread a negative view that's fewer people who might try it. So even if we promise to update and improve those players may never come back.
Likewise, it's been four years - I don't think people would believe us if we put out a crap first release and promised to make it better. Just how long will it take us? ;)
yahooo
25th January 2012, 02:32 PM
Do you stay shut up slowly trying to work on it or do you go 'Alpha'.. and risk it all.. what a question....
From the way your situation is going it certainly seems like your not going to be able to do anything substantial for the forseeable future. as I see it, its your project and its your call how you proceed, the playtest idea might help guide your decision, the 'collection of OLD gamers' is a very good point and hopefully the feed back would not be drivel..
Anyway after following you for so long and to know your so close, your response outlining what the situation is very welcome.
ira_hayes
25th January 2012, 07:12 PM
The play test idea is a great idea and would give you a feel for how a full release would be viewed. If you're worried about stuff like getting the stitches right on some model I would move ahead with a release. Honestly, for some of us old gamers the visual accuracy is nice but not the number one consideration. I'd rather have well thought out game play. Are the weapons balanced, is the spawn system well thought out, do the maps work, do the maps and every aspect of the game promote team play, are there choke points were appropriate and are there alternate routes when appropriate (assuming of course that these were all goals of the game).
Look at the modern FPS games out right now - MW3 claims team play but the reality is that no matter what mode you play it's just a deathmatch. BF is just a hopeless exercise in hiding. Both games look awesome - but they stink. I'm getting ready to run through the 4th prestige in MW3 and I for one cant wait for this game to come out! My guess is that after I get through 4th I'll go right back to the original DOD, that's what always happens with me. New games thrill you short term but it's the team work, COMMUNITY and gameplay that keep me going back, not the graphics or accuracy of every visual detail.
This is only my second post but I've been lurking ever since Rosie posted a link in the Sunlits forums. In the end you really only have yourselves to answer to and hold accountable for your work - if you think its done, release it if not don't. Either way, I'll give it a shot when it does come out.

4 weeks (or 8) after 4 years.. I rather see Pegasus in.

Well if WWII are on the comeback then we're in luck. :D
I know there has been a *lot* of anticipation for Ham and Jam from DoD players and I hope they'll enjoy it. My only worry is they may not like the limited choice of weapons in the original release and the lack of snipers. :icon_confused:
The airborne for Pegasus is getting close to completion - the model is "rigged" and works with the animations there are just some issues to resolve with bad deformation around the pelvis. This is a common problem area for animators so it's not something I don't know how to solve. It's just a little time consuming.
That said, when its done I can make progress rapidly. LOD levels are fairly easy to make and putting the webbing/equipment on won't take long.
I actually got a few more animations done last night and squashed a few bugs we had due to Valves animation system. What I can say is that in some areas our player animations actually work better than Valve's own DoD ones. :)

I agree with what you're saying as far as players who have a negative experience with a game are likely to abandon it entirely, even if improvements are likely. That happened to me with the old American Revolution game mod from HL1...I can't even remember its name. I kept hearing about it, downloaded it (which took a full day), and played it for literally 17 minutes and gave up. Never played it again.
That said, the likelihood of that happening with the majority of the devoted players in this forum is very slim. Most of us have been following the dev process for YEARS. We're invested in the success of the game....it's not the same as some random player giving it a look-see on a whim.
A controlled test might assuage some of your fears and push it closer to completion...more importantly, it might draw in older modders who have left the scene.

I would count myself in that group, altho I don't play DoD any more I always hoped HaJ would make up for a lot of the disappointment I felt Source brought to the game and I'm sure there is quite a large group of people who share this feeling. Being lucky enough to have already played HaJ I feel like it makes up for and supersedes what I could have hoped for in DoD:S. What HaJ might currently lack in weapon choice it makes up for it in gameplay and I think a lot of people will identify this when they play. Can't wait to get in a full server sometime soon, keep on troopin'
