View Full Version : Adding Heavy Mgs for British?

in most games the British only have the Bren gun to serve as both a heavy mg and a support mg, while the Germans have guns that do each. The Bren doesnt hold as many rounds as the MG34 or MG42, so it is much less effective as a heavy mg. it might be worthwhile to think of adding in a Vickers or Lewis for the British and adding a STG44 for the Germans to match the Bren (as the Stg matches the BAR in DoD:S and DoD). This could balance the factions, and also provide a weapon that is very rarely, if ever, seen in FPS's

-Vickers is used through 1944maybe include Turtle helmets seen on these troops

Based on the fact one of these British soldiers is wearing puttees, this is probably ww1, but the Lewis was used in the beginning of WW2 by the British

A few problems here:
The Vickers is a medium MG, requiring a team of guys to operate it (gunner, loader + others). It's a water cooled mg, so it's not something that you can quickly and easily deploy. The 4 or 5 guys in your photo are all going to responsible for operating that one gun.
Lewis was mainly a WWI weapon. As you stated, it was also used early into WW2, but was replaced by the Bren gun.
The Bren is an awesome weapon - it's all about the trade-off between fire-power, accuracy and manoeuvrability. Everyone seems to think that a 30 round magazine means it's going to be useless - the reality is far from it. And in actual fact, very few FPS games require Heavy Mg's - the closest you're going to get in WW2 is the .50 Cal - which always comes equipped with a Jeep or Tank for a good reason ...

Ingame the MG34 and Bren excel at different areas and give a great balance. The MG34 is a great static defence weapon whereas the Bren provides accurate roaming fire. In reality the Bren was too accurate for a LMG..

In real life consistently firing anything over a 8 round burst in a larger rifle caliber can quickly melt the barrel - hence the reason for a changeable barrel on the MG34 and a REALLY quick changing barrel on the MG42. Changing the barrel on an MG34 is no small feat and requires at least triple the time of changing a few mags on a bren. Now whether or not there is barrel changing in the game - I have no idea. But the trade off for the Bren was that although it's user had to reload often, the short ammo forced them to think about short bursts AND helped prevent overheating.
I think my point is supposed to be:
the bren and MG34 can be balanced quite properly depending on the complexity of the weapon characteristics
EDIT:
also technically speaking, the MG34 and the MG42 used on a bipod were referred to as light machineguns, but used on the Lafette 42 tripod mount they were called heavy machineguns and had a crew of 3-6.
In real life the browning 30.cal was problematic to move with and set up quickly (forget about what you saw in Saving Private Ryan) which led to the "never quite right" M1919A6 which was not used until the final months of WW2: "....the M1919A6, was an attempt to make the weapon into a light machine gun by attaching a buttstock and lighter barrel — 4 lb (1.8 kg) instead of 7 lb (3.2 kg). The A6 version was in fact heavier than the A4 without its tripod, at 32 lb (15 kg), though its bipod made for faster deployment and enabled the machine gun team to dispense with one man (the tripod bearer). The A6 version saw increasing service in the latter days of World War II and was used extensively in Korea"

Actuall when it came to the Bren and the MG34 we didn't look for a 1-to-1 balance. We looked at both weapons and looked at their good and bad points and drew up a list for each and replicated them.
So while there is no direct relationship between the two, the way they are used in game gives them balance. In other words, if you tried to use the MG34 like a Bren, you'll come unstuck and vice versa.
