View Full Version : Leaning

I've been watching the gameplay videos immediately upon every update on the website, and I get the impression that many kills come when a player is attempting to strafe back and forth at a corner in order to get a view of the field.
Has there been any consideration of implementing a right lean/left lean feature, which would expose less of the player model and allow for stationary viewing around obstacles?
It works well in Insurgency and didn't work too well in Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

We've never really considered it and to be honest it has more negative point against it from a dev point of view to be worth the effort doing it.
+ You can lean round corners
- Potential for abuse as you can find the spot where you have a clear view and only 1px of you is visible
- Lot of coding work
- Takes away two buttons which already have default binds
- Requires extra animation work
- Slows down gameplay
That's not to say it will never happen, it just wont be in 1.0 for sure.
Most kills happen when you are caught short in the open or when you run down the middle of a road.

While I have never always agreed with Valve's gameplay strategy (they were going to remove grenades!), I did agree with the DOD Dev team's ultimate decision to remove bleeding and adamantly refuse to ever add medics or corner leaning.
I guess it all pertains to the pace you intend for your game to play at. IN real life trying to learn around a corner and fire a rifle accurately - especially opposite of the hand you shoot with - does not work well. It usually ends up being spray and pray. It gaming, I've just found that it slows things down as a 1/4 of the guys are trying to get that perfect "creep" around the corner to get a shot off. Granted this is NOT DOD nor Insurgency; I'm just using the Dev's decision as a previous example.
Another thought:
keep in mind insurgency DOES have limited reinforcements on many maps. This is VERY critical sticking point because it means speed is not a factor; you can win a war of attrition. In games like DOD and TFC/TF2 you cannot

I have to totally agree with Wile on the concept of pace. Though many don't realize it, this is what really forms the feel of a game.

The mod is not balanced for lean.

It isn't balanced for dedicated servers too. Oh, and it isn't balanced for more than 18 players too. Sorry guys.

...but some of the devs are definitely unbalanced!

Pace is dictated by the players as well. I personally do NOT play at a slow pace on Insurgency and it works very well for me. The players who prone and crawl and peak aren't a benefit to the team as a whole, though, and I can see your concern. In most cases though, proning is a much bigger strain on pace than leaning ever is. Personally, leaning is a huge benefit for me when I'm actively capping an objective and I know that the other team is coming to find me and clear the zone. If I can lean around a crate or vehicle and have a clear range of fire into their approach zones, it ends up saving me many times. I'm an easy target when I'm standing in the open as necessitated by not being able to lean.
However, I'm not even necessarily even talking about shooting....I'm talking about scouting. To me it makes more sense to peak around an open corner than to dance/strafe back and forth, trying to get someone to fire at you and expose their position.
As for firing around a corner with your off-hand, it was part of qualifying for handguns when I worked Homeland Security....though I've never tried to fire a rifle around a corner with my left hand. I do so all the time in paintball though, and it's a necessary skill set.
I don't mind if it's not in the game. I just noticed the strafe dancing around corners in a few of the videos and wondered what the opinions were.

Actually leaning around corners for scouting does make a lot of sense, LOL I wish somebody would code a (popular) game for that, i.e. you can peek but can't shoot worth a darn.
However as already stated it'd be a monster to code at this point probably.

It wouldn't be hard to code - at all. It's more of an animation task

really?
honestly I'm not a coder, I'd have no idea. it just seemed like something you'd have to redo a lot of code. Just scripting mods for games like STALKER gives me nightmares sometimes :D
