We had one of these ages ago and it was good fun and a way of getting some info out to people. So its back, this time with a few rules!
You may only ask one question per post.
You may not post another question till two (2) other people have asked questions.
Don't ask about the release date.Go!
:)

To the modellers, what's the best FREE modelling program? (Not really to do with H&J but who cares ¬_¬)
I'll ask a proper question about the mod after two people have posted, could be a while though. :)

Depends on what you want to do with it.
Of the free ones I know of you've got Blender, XSI Mod Tool, Maya PLE, GMax and probably a bunch of other OpenSource ones.
If you're planning to "move on" to the more pro packages it's probably worth using XSI, May a or GMax (Gmax is more like Max 4 but you'll get the hang of the basics).

Do you plan to include any sort of chain of command system based on different classes?

Not at the moment. Just getting the basics working is hard enough.

How many maps are you hoping for the first public release of the mod ?
Jed

3 minimum, maybe 4. First ones out with probably be Pegasus, Radar and Gold. Theres some others in development but its a question of whats ready first.

We plan on release to have each a melee, primary and grenade(s) for each class.
Melee currently stand as a Fairbairn-Sykes knife of Entrenching tool
Primaries are Enfield/K98, Sten (various mk's)/MP40 and Bren/MG34
Grenades are Stielhandgranate and Mills Bomb with their smoke grenade equivilant.

No point, you need the textures and the models to make anything decent. The .fgd wouldnt make the maps be made any quicker from the community as you cant test the entities anyway.

Pretty much all the releases with be beta's, thats how things work. The last version we ever release will be the final version and everything up till that point is a beta really. I know what you mean though, there will be private beta testing and the subsequent release will be the public beta. Methods of selection for beta testers remains a secret.

What is it like developing a mod and do you feel that you have learnt alot from the development of Ham and Jam ?
spine

It's fun and challenging, but also frustraiting at times.
I think the worst feeling is that you don't have full control over all aspects,
but have to trust that everyone is doing their bit.
And I'm not even running things around here... ;)

What he said x2. Plus the added bonus of having to pick up the pieces when people don't do the stuff they shouldve. Its fun mod making apparently. :O

Ginger Lord

Pegasus.
Although its a pain when Jed finds some new research materials that points out half the map is at the wrong scale/in the wrong place/doesnt look right/shouldn't be there.
It's possibly the oldest map in the mod and has been fun to see it evolve.

In a rough comparison to say donner in DOD:S to get an idea of scale, how big are the maps?

This can be shown best by a quick image. Using cl_leveloverview 15 on all the maps, gives this result. Providing the command is the same between dods and haj.

Edit: It is worth pointing out that these show the maps as they are and as such, not all areas shown are usable ingame. I'd say a good 70% of the area is however.

How big is the dev team, I mean the main dev team for Ham and Jam?

How many teams are available (us, germany, russia...) and how are mappers going to be able to select them (a game entity, I suppose?)?
I know that's two questions, but shhh don't tell.;)
Ginger Lord

First release will be British vs Germans with hopefully British Airborne or Infantry selectable. Standard Wehrmacht infantry will be the opponents and perhaps some Fallshirmjagers too. Maybe.
Subsequent release will add other Commonwealth and Axis forces. The Americans will never appear and the Russians are also highly unlikely to appear as a playable force.

What's the maximum range of the smgs/rifles/mgs? I mean at what range will skill stop and the cone of fire take over?
Ginger Lord
25th June 2008, 04:55 PM
Nothing is set in stone yet and values are being constantly tweaked so its hard to give a decent answer.
Currently, standing on top of Pegasus bridge its fairly easy to hit a stationary target by the Cafe Gondree, with a SMG you'd need to be prone to get anywhere close to hitting them.

CoF doesn't effect range at all really. Put it this way, the CoF is tighter than DoD on most weapons. What takes skill is learning the max ranges of your weapon. A rifle will take do 90 damage hitting a target the length of the bridge. SMGs do only about 45-50 damage at that range. So for a given distance you need more hits to kill with an SMG than a rifle. Reason being Rifles are for engagements over distance but due to the slow rate of fire not great up close. SMGs are not for sniping but excel at CQB.

Thing to ask yourself is "did they have them in real life?".
Maybe the chap in command had, but in MP games you have to treat people fairly, so they'd all end up with a pair of bins.

Will this game have any similarities to the classic Day of Defeats? (Not DoD:Source, I'm talking betas - version 1.3) I don't mean completely mimic them of course, but I found the gameplay was significantly dumbed down in source compared to the earlier versions. They had some good qualities, will Ham and Jam be something like those were?
