What about zeltbahns? You never see those in games anymore. I haven't seen them since moh:allied assault, although I think it was in call of duty 2.
This is what it looks like translated into the game. I think this is from an operation flashpoint mod.
They were used as tents and raincoats, but also serves as camouflage and to break up one's outline.

With the quality and amount of foliage I see in the maps, they'd work pretty well. :p

Were they used by all units? I guess it might come down to whether it is historically accurate.

I mostly see them rolled up on everyone's back strap. Perhaps they can be used at soldier's discretion? Maybe the machine gunner will use them?
I also notice not many game features foliage on people's helmets? Perhaps sniper will wear ferns and leaves strapped to his helmet?

From what I understand I think we are going for what was used the most.
I am afraid that won't be any rare exciting uniforms.
But we are thinking to expand the the selection of uniforms/models at some point
from what I've heard, first we want a basic set to get the game up and running.
(I know what your thinking though and I realy want something special to, tired of
the old usual stuff.) ;)

But the zeltbahn was produced in the millions. every soldier had them lol. I guess it isn't as popular an item and not featured very often, but I'm sure it must have been used plenty in the war. it was only featured in 1 ww2 movie to date i think.

At the moment the focus is on getting a set of models together based on the most common uniforms for each side. If we get that done we can actually release the game. Other uniforms and equipment will come later on as we add things to the game.
And if we did add that jacket, it would look a damn site better than the crappy models in that screenshot.

If you ever have a map with dense rain effects, it would be an excuse to have zeltbahn-clad Germans.

hey, I like the zeltbahn just as much as the next guy, but its not going to drape and blow in game like a real rainsmock would without some sort of voodoo magic or a blood-pact with satan.

Hey, the Zeltbahnen were very common in the Early War phase for the Germans,
heres a Picture

The Normal Soldiers used them, and Special troops like Storm-Pinoneers and Sharpshooters, from 1939-1942/43 after that time Regular Camouflage was Produced, but they never could equip the whole Army with this stuff, so Zeltbahnen were used till the end by lots of normal troops.

I presume you dont mean Flecktarn as that wasnt adopted by the German Army till 1990...
I know what you mean though, however unless we have SS unit's ingame, the chances of seeing it will be quite rare. Splinter based camo was more popular in the Wehrmacht and even then it was pretty rare.

also the luftwaffe used the splinter pattern camo. Yeah, only the SS had all of those crazy camouflage patterns like the pea pattern and the oak leaves and the palm pattern, etc. I've always loved those camo patterns despite them being worn by the ss. they were like works of art, and always fun to make as textures.

Here is an excellent photo taken by reinactors of the 12th SS Panzer Division. It saw a lot of action around Caen.

Oops SS. No Waffen-SS in HaJ ;) Whermacht Heer and Luftwaffe in the form of German paratroopers (eventually).
As said before, we are only creating "generic" common uniforms due to the range of player models and theatres we have to cover. This could well mean seeing an 1940 jacket in a 1939 map so you have to give some artistic license for the sake of practicality.

Is the lack of SS a moral decision by the team, or are you just not focusing on any battles that involved any Waffen-SS divisions?
Jed

It's a bit of both really. The problem with the Germans is that they had so many uniform and equipment combinations that just doing the Heer is a task in itself. If we thrown the SS into the mix things get more complex still.
Also, when you start adding the SS your game starts to attract a bit of unwelcome attention. You get accused of being pro-Nazi and you start finding some rather unsavoury characters in your servers.
So we're not trying to be revisionist about history - we're just focusing more on the regular Heer troops that the Waffen-SS at the moment.
And before you ask, the decision to put swastikas in the game is stuff under a lot of discussion.

Your mod is looking great! A question then, will there be some commonwealth soldier models wearing leather jerkins or the later turtle helmets, or variations without the back pack?
Though I take it it's a tad too early to ask since you guys are focusing on just releasing it?
Jed

Anything is possible but at the moment we're just trying to get the most generic set of uniforms out that work across a wide variety of theatres.
